Actually polystyrene is very easy to recycle. It’s usually just uneconomical but thanks to Styro-Go’s patented technology we have changed that equation. The properties that make polystyrene so bad to put in the landfill are what make it so easy and ideal to recycle.
All recycling technology is evolving but plastic recycling is evolving very rapidly. Typical polystyrene recycling for more than the past 10 years repurposes the plastic into a filler used to manufacture various moldings including cabinetry, tiles, frames, and other plastic moldings. Most people already have products in their home/office made from recycled polystyrene as the remanufactured products are very hard to distinguish from those made from wood or other raw materials.
While we do not offer door-to-door residential pick up service, Styro-Go partners with many municipalities across Alberta and British Columbia to enable people to recycle their polystyrene waste. Our mobile-based technology gives us the flexibility to offer the service at a competitive cost over a wide geographic area.
Foam trays are a form of polystyrene but are usually in the form of PSP (polystyrene paper) not the more common EPS (expanded polystyrene) usually used in packaging. These are recyclable but are done in a separate batch as they are commonly regarded as “post-consumer grade“ even when clean. Even perfectly clean white meat trays turn mint green when recycled.
